Taylor Swift on Wednesday revealed plans for her new album, which will be called “Reputation” and be released Nov. 10, on her Instagram account.
She also announced that the album’s first single will be released Thursday night, just in time to possibly make a big splash at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, which just happens to be hosted by her rival Katy Perry.
The cover of “Reputation,” the follow-up to her Grammy-winning album “1989” from 2014, suggests that Swift has something to say about hers, with the black-and-white art featuring fake headlines from newspapers.
In recent months, Perry has, at times, rekindled her beef with Swift — which stems from an alleged slight about backup dancers that inspired Swift to write the song “Bad Blood” about their rivalry. Most recently, though, Perry said that she has forgiven Swift and apologized for anything she has done to her.
In any case, Swift’s new song will be her first new music since last year’s duet with Zayn on “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” from the “Fifty Shades Darker” soundtrack. Swift’s “1989” album sold 1.3 million copies in its first week and featured three No. 1 singles, including “Blank Space,” which had a dramatic video shot at Oheka Castle in Huntington.
Arrival of new Swift material is always a huge deal, but the timing of the first single off “Reputation” carries plenty of potential issues. With only three sales days left in the week, it’s not clear if Swift could knock Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber’s “Despacito” from the No. 1 spot it has held for the past 15 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100. Even if “Despacito” holds on for a 16th week, which would tie Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” for the longest chart-topper in history, it seems unlikely that the song could hold off Swift for two weeks.
On Friday, Swift erased all content from her social media accounts, and beginning on Monday began posting a series of cryptic, silent videos of digitally generated snakes.
