After Monday night’s strong opening to Season Five’s Battle Rounds, last night’s show was a bit of a letdown.
Maybe it’s because the pairings weren’t that dramatic or because the montage-advances have returned, where we find out who wins and who loses in a round in 30 seconds rather than a full-blown segment. (Good luck to all those folks trying to build a following for votes later on!)
In any case, here’s how Battle Rounds Night 2 broke down:
TEAM CHRISTINA: Jacob Poole vs. Matthew Schuler, “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark”
This battle showed how hard the Fall Out Boy song really is to sing. Between the rhythmic phrasing and the wide range, both Jacob and Matthew had to fight to stay in the song. However, Matthew seemed much more at ease and sounded much more memorable.
CHRISTINA PICK: Matthew
SHOULD’VE PICKED: Matthew
TEAM CEE LO: Kat Robichaud vs. R. Anthony, “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing”
This was weird and uncomfortable from top to bottom, with Kat trying to hold back and R. Anthony trying to push too much. (Blake Shelton’s impression of how she would open the mail was right on target.) Their voices never blended well and neither did their crazy performance styles. However, Kat has an interesting voice and personality that will serve her well when she doesn’t have to play nice with others.
CEE LO PICK: Kat
SHOULD’VE PICKED: Kat
The montages were: TEAM CEE LO: Cole Vosbury vs. Lupe Carroll, “Africa” (CEE LO PICK: Cole); TEAM BLAKE: E.G. Daily vs. Sam Cerniglia, “Something to Talk About” (BLAKE PICK: E.G.); TEAM ADAM: Ashley DuBose vs. Justin Blake, “Just a Fool” (ADAM PICK: Ashley)
TEAM BLAKE: Monika Leigh vs. Ray Boudreaux, “Some Kind of Wonderful”
This battle was a mini version of what happens in the music industry every day. Monika is a great performer with an all-right voice. Ray is a great singer who performs OK. How do you compare them? Well, Blake went with Ray and Cee Lo stole Monika. Maybe they’ll square off again down the line, but they both need to improve if they’re going to get much further.
BLAKE PICK: Ray
SHOULD’VE PICKED: Ray
