Here's a glimpse of Penn Badgley as Jeff Buckley, singing “Once I Was,” a song by Buckley's father, the '60s-era troubadour Tim Buckley. It's from the upcoming film “Greetings From Tim Buckley.”

Jeff was a rising star in the mid-1990s who blended his singer-songwriter heritage with grunge-era volume. His father died of a drug overdose in 1975 at the age of 28. Jeff, on the cusp of fame, died of accidental drowning in 1997 at the age of 30.

Members of Jeff Buckley's cult following, especially here in New York, where the singer got his start at Cafe Sin-e, will likely be scrutinizing this movie carefully.

Judging by this clip, Badgley may not have the range and vocal power of Jeff, who was known for his high, keening, almost feminine voice, but he certainly has the mannerisms. On this song, Badgley begins at low volume, eyes closed and slightly swaying, before building to a dramatic crescendo — a classic Jeff Buckley tactic.

“Greetings From Tim Buckley" will be available on demand April 16 and due in theaters May 3.
