Sinead O'Connor's shaved head and dramatic features had made her one of the most easily recognized artists from the past couple decades. But fans were doing a double-take after photos of her surfaced from a performance in Ireland.
Over the weekend O'Connor, 44, was at the Bray Seaside Festival where she sang backup vocals at the summer festival. She sported hair that was short, jet-black and choppy. Her face and figure appeared heavier than in recent years.
O'Connor, an Irish singer-songwriter who rose to fame in the 1980s, had been notorious for her behavior — notably the "Saturday Night Live" episode during which she tore a photo of the Pope to protest child sexual abuse. Her new look has seemingly bewildered fans, some questioning if it was even O'Connor in the photos.
Actress Candace Cameron Bure, of "Full House" fame, tweeted "Is this really Sinead O'Connor? I honestly can't tell it's the same person."
Comedian Michael Rudolph Clos also tweeted: "You see the pics of Sinead O'connor? She has slowly transformed into Grenade O'connor" -- referencing a popular term used in the show "Jersey Shore."
The "Nothing Compares 2 U" songstress is now touring Europe. Her most recent album, "Throw Down Your Arms," was released in 2005.
