'The Lone Ranger' first look from Disney

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski comes Disney/Bruckheimer Films' "The Lone Ranger". Tonto, played by Johnny Depp, a spirit warrior on a personal quest, joins forces in a fight for justice with John Reid, played by Armie Hammer, a lawman who has become a masked avenger. "The Lone Ranger" will be released in May 2013.

Disney released this first-look photo from its upcoming Western "The Lone Ranger" Tuesday morning. That's Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer ("J. Edgar") in the title role.

Director Gore Verbinski has already said that this is Tonto's movie, not the Ranger's, but this photo raises some questions. Will it be a light-hearted action-adventure like the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise? Will it be a self-conscious comedy-spoof along the lines of "The Princess Bride?" (Hammer is about to star in "Mirror Mirror," which appears to have a "Bride"-ish quality.) It clearly doesn't look like a straight-ahead Western. At least, not with Depp in that make-up.

"The Lone Ranger" is due in theaters May 2013.
