Call this a no-brainer. Bob Mackie will design the costumes for “The Cher Show,” the upcoming bio-musical based on the singer’s life.
Anyone else would have been a travesty, considering the designer’s nearly 50-year relationship with Cher. Their close association dates back to his work on her TV show in the ’70s when her daring, gravity-defying dresses left little to the imagination. Perhaps his most famous look was that over-the-top plunging number she wore to the 1986 Oscars; most recently he put the 71-year-old entertainer in a couple of knockouts for the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.
No word yet on which actress will get to wear the fab designs in the show, scheduled for a tryout in Chicago in June before moving to Broadway in the fall. Mackie released sketches of three of the costumes yesterday, and seemed excited to get to work on more. “Thirty gazillion outfits later, the lady is about to be immortalized in a musical,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Darling, my sketchpad is ready!”
