Sibling rivalry between two brothers gets downright nasty in the late Sam Shepard’s “True West,” coming back to Broadway early next year with Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano in the lead roles.

The Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-nominated drama was produced on Broadway in 2000, with Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly alternating in the roles. Presumably that won’t be the case this time, with Dano playing a Hollywood screenwriter, and Hawke, his lowlife brother. Holed up in their mother’s California home, they demonstrate no brotherly love as they go at each other over, well, just about everything.

Hawke has long been a Shepard collaborator, appearing in Steppenwolf’s production of his “Buried Child” and directing a 2010 Off-Broadway revival of “A Lie of the Mind.”

James Macdonald will direct the production for Roundabout Theatre. Previews are scheduled to start Dec. 27 with a Jan. 24 opening.
