SpongeBob SquarePants is about to test the waters of Broadway.

The popular Nickelodeon cartoon character, who lives in a pineapple under the sea, will move into the Palace Theatre when the new musical “SpongeBob SquarePants” begins previews Nov. 6 leading up to its Dec. 4 opening.

The show had a successful tryout last summer in Chicago, and the four leads from that production — Ethan Slater as SpongeBob; Gavin Lee as his crusty neighbor Squidward; Lilli Cooper as Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas who lives underwater; and Danny Skinner as SpongeBob’s dimwitted starfish pal Patrick — will appear on Broadway. The full cast has not been announced.

The plot follows SpongeBob and friends trying to prevent the total annihilation of their undersea world. Songs included those penned by Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, John Legend, Sara Bareilles, Panic! at the Disco, Lady Antebellum and Cyndi Lauper.

Tickets are $39-$159 and will go on sale June 26 at or by calling 877-250-2929.
