The clash of the cosmetics titans is about to be over.

“War Paint,” starring Northport’s Patti LuPone as Helena Rubinstein and Christine Ebersole as Elizabeth Arden, will close on Dec. 30. The musical, directed by Michael Greif, examines the fierce, sometimes bitter competition between the two trailblazing entrepreneurs who founded major cosmetics companies but famously never met.

Both LuPone and Ebersole were nominated for Tonys best actress in a musical, but lost out (as predicted by almost everyone) to Bette Midler in “Hello, Dolly!” The show also stars John Dossett as Arden’s husband and Douglas Sills as Rubinstein’s confidant.

As previously scheduled, “War Paint” will be on a hiatus from Sept. 26 to Oct. 1 before returning Oct. 3 to finish out its run. It will have played 300 regular and 33 preview performances at the Nederlander Theatre.
