Adam Lambert uses smoke, lasers and tongue on 'American Idol'

Adam Lambert is about to show the kids how it's done on "American Idol," as Ryan announces Alicia Keys is going to fill his shoes and mentor next week.

He's singing "What Do You Want From Me." It's as theatrical and professional and shriek-inducing as you'd imagine. Starts silhouetted, smoke swirling around him; singing slow, controlled, playing with the notes. I'm telling you, it's impossible to look away when this guy's on stage.

Lasers and lights flash on, and he turns the energy and intensity up. What can you say?You either love him or you don't, but no denying he puts on a heck of a show. I don't love the song, so there's no moment here. I always thought he was at his best doing tender rather than fierce.

Ah, out comes the tongue and the big huge note, at the end. No real screaming, though -- except from the audience.

He tells Ryan afterward "Idol" showed him how hard he needed to work to give the audience a surprise every time out.
