Burnell Taylor next on "American Idol," doing Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings." He's got me from the start; has a special tone and light in his voice, just makes you smile along with him right away. Plus there's an urgency that builds; hard to look away when he's on stage. No pyrotechnics here; just hits the notes and sings from his heart.
Keith Urban praises the "unique timbre" in his voice, likes his mannerisms, calls him "magnetic." Nicki Minaj likes how he puts his "own twist" on everything, tells him "good job." Randy Jackson says "very nice," Mariah Carey says "I don't wanna go through a long drawn-out thing," and then of course does her trademark ramble. In short: she likes him and finds him talented.
Amber Holcomb closes out the show with Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This." She definitely has a strong voice; feels like she's rushing it a bit, though. No drama for me; I'm a big fan but no goosebumps tonight for me. Big last note, though.
All the judges but Carey stand for her, however. "That was beautiful," says Urban, praising how "effortless" her vocals are. Minaj says "that was the best performance of the night," compares her voice and aura to "Whitney Houston's first album." Says she's "on another level." Jackson says "you blew it out of the box tonight," tells her "everything was so perfect." Carey says "you sounded magnificent," praises her "natural gift."
