'American Idol': 'A Hard Day’s Night' as top 9 take on the Lennon-McCartney songbook

“Oh, What a Night” of surprises it was for Michael Lynche, Andrew Garcia and Aaron Kelly, as former frontrunners found themselves in the bottom three . . . and Tim Urban wasn’t!

“Teflon Tim” Urban surprised us with an upbeat performance of “All My Loving,” getting into character by donning the famous Beatles’ moppet coif.  He actually sounded really good and continues to charm us with his pearly whites.

Siobhan Magnus looked like Little Bo Peep as she performed a very sedate version of “Across the Universe,” and though I’m a fan, I didn’t like this performance and was concerned she might be in danger.

Casey James performed “Jealous Guy,” a song many of us weren’t familiar with from John Lennon’s 1971  “Imagine” album. He sounded great, but that Goldilocks hairdo and white dinner jacket didn’t mesh for us. But we feel that he’ll easily be in the top four.

Lee Dewyze and Crystal Bowersox were the best of the night. Lee’s “Hey Jude” performance exuded confidence, eye contact and attitude. Crystal’s rendition of “Come Together” proved why she’ll be in the finale, probably along with Lee Dewyze

The tweens’ reactions were unanimous – Jason P. was bummed out that “Big Mike” was in danger of going home but relieved that he was saved.  Deanna T. was doing the happy dance when Ryan Seacrest announced the judges’ decision.

Nicky T. admitted to mom Gina (she’s hoping for a Lee Dewyze vs. Crystal Bowersox finale) that while Aaron Kelly is still his favorite, there’s no way he’s as talented as Crystal Bowersox.

My 3-year-old granddaughter Alex got it right when she told us, “I don’t like 'Big Mike.'  He’s stinky.”  As the saying goes: "Out of the mouths of babes" (Psalms 8:2).

The bagpipes and didgeridoos were unnecessary distractions, as was the crazy booer in the audience.

Overall, the performances were not really that bad from a lackluster group … in comparison to previous seasons of "American Idol."
