'American Idol' fashion: A little razzle-dazzle

"American Idol" contestants, for the most part, looked swell last night. And while their outfits ran the gamut, almost everyone added a touch of razzle-dazzle.

Leading the pack in the “you glow girl” department (we’re leaving Jennifer Lopez for later) was Haley Reinhart in a seemingly quiet taupe slit-sleeved Haute Hippie minidress amped up with a smattering of rhinestones. This girl has the “it” factor and it’s hard to take your eyes off her…just ask Steven Tyler.

Sweet-faced Lauren Alaina found the perfect silhouette for her figure in a knee length chiffon job with painterly stripes of fuchsia, pink and blue, cinched with a thick patent belt. Cowboy boots and huge silver fan earrings finished the look. The earrings may have been a bit too-too.

Speaking of too much, well we’re happy Jacob Lusk shed his signature lounge lizard-meets-gospel singer look for the night and went a little more casual. But was the geek chic ensemble perhaps trying too hard? If he edited just one thing – the plaid jacket, or turquoise cardigan, or purple striped bow tie – it would have worked better.

On the other hand, Scotty McCreery kept it simple, though a blue leather jacket that matched his eyes was his nod to something special. And while James Durbin has become sort of a rock ‘n’ roll fashion peacock, last night he passed on the frippery, opting for a basic berry colored tee-shirt, jazzed up with a vest, lots of chains and charms around is neck and black pants. He looked great in the lightened up look.

The fashion loser of the night was Casey Abrams – the slim black suit wasn’t so bad, even the chartreuse tie was fine, but with the straw fedora add-on – well, it was completely contrived. He looked better in the more casual black outfit he wore earlier in the show during his duet though Tyler called him “weird beard.”

But back to real razzle-dazzle: Jennifer Lopez once again stunned in a feather-hemmed deco beaded dress in beige. One has to imagine that it’s hard to compete with sidekick Tyler who wore silver lame. For real.
