'American Idol' fashion: Angie Miller’s hair is a star

“I like the hair,” Keith Urban told “American Idol” contestant Angie Miller who had straightened her haystack mound of curls for Wednesday night’s homage to the Beatles. OK, a nice compliment, but Ryan Seacrest took it to another level when he said, “You’ve got a new friend .?.?. the flatiron.” Jeez, gents, there are things we ladies would rather not discuss on national TV, included in the mix: beauty tools.

But Miller did look good with her shiny, straight locks, high-low leather vest with windowpane trim, super-skinny leather leggings and high-heeled black boots. Mariah Carey gave it the nod saying, “The ensemble is pow.”

Miller wasn’t the only one to work the all-black look. Kree Harrison got props for a simple, figure-flattering outfit that included a black blouse with studs at the shoulder, slim cropped pants, a crystal-laden belt and sky-high sparkly platform stilettos. “I love that you’re serving up five-inch heels and all black realness,” Nicki Minaj said. “You do look stunning,” Seacrest told her.

Candice Glover threw on a black and white vest over her own all-black ensemble, which included black, snakeskin printed pants. She looked like a rocker chick – and the red streaks in her hair are fun.

Janelle Arthur wore a  windswept side braid and shunned black opting for an all white, long dress that boasted a beaded neckline. Despite the formality, Arthur flashed her cowboy boots beneath proving she was a true country girl. Minaj said she looked like “a beautiful swan goddess.”

We were surprised that butterfly-loving Carey didn’t comment on Amber Holcomb’s graphic printed dress that featured butterfly wings. It was figure flattering (what wouldn’t be on this lean machine?) but maybe not right for the moment.

As for the guys, Burnell Taylor wore a jacket of leather strips – beige, brown and black – hated it, though we liked his performance. Devin Velez donned a slim, charcoal gray suit with a burgundy, collarless shirt beneath. He looked kind of swanky and cool, and Randy Jackson noted his leopard print loafers. “I do like the shoes. The shoes are kind of fly.”

Lazaro Arbos performed so poorly, we felt bad for him. You have to be really good to pull off a taxicab yellow jacket and red shoes, so it all ended up looking a bit silly.

“I like the jacket and I like that shirt and I like them skinny jeans,” said Minaj of Paul Jolley’s get-up that included a purplish velvet jacket that topped an abstract printed collar shirt. Unfortunately, she definitively did not like his performance.

At the judges’ table, we get a kick out of Jackson’s accessories. Last night he wore a big gold medallion pin that looked a heck of a lot like a manual citrus juicer. Carey did a gorgeous metallic dotted gown, while Minaj got her own glow on in a short, lacy sunny yellow frock. And Urban, wearing a mustang emblazoned –T-shirt always keeps it simple and always looks good.
