'American Idol' fashion: Go (almost) naked and go home

Proving that less is not necessarily more, last night’s first contestant (let’s just call her what’s-her-name) wore a bikini top and minuscule boy (no, more like ‘oy’) shorts to her audition.  While the boom-boom bod had Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson behaving like frat boys, her voice lacked, “the power that your get-up has,” Tyler said.

But speaking of frat boys, fashion matters, according to the judges, because while fraternity brother Kyle Cruz had the vocals, Tyler told the contestant “You’ve got to lose that look,” speaking of his sloppy blue plaid flannel shirt.

No such complaints of pretty girl Aubree Dieckmeyer whose voice combined with white flowy skirt and belly baring top prompted Jennifer Lopez to say, “I love the look, I love everything.”

In case you don’t think viewers care about fashion, one tweeted of kooky contestant Ali Shields girlie-prep get-up, “This must be Ali’s favorite TV outfit, since she wore it on "American Idol" and @TheEllenShow.”

As for the judges, well natch La Lopez was stand out in two outfits – first a bold floral blouse with slit sleeves, shorts and loose tousled hair, and then in a Stella McCartney poured-on minidress (first seen at the designer's Fall 2011 show), a sort of retro-meets-Matrix black number with one graphic, dotted shoulder of net and her hair whooshed up into a glam bun.

Of course Tyler broke all the rules, including donning a vintage aviator cap that reminded us of cartoon character Snoopy in Snoopy vs. The Red Baron. Love it.
