Andrew Garcia is singing "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" on "American Idol," and somehow forgets the words in front of Miley Cyrus. She wants him to "lose the guitar," to get him to connect more with the audience. Good advice.
In a sport coat and jeans. Wow, a totally different take on the song -- really edgy, aggressive tone to it; and totally modern. Not busting loose 100% though for some reason. Does some slick dancing, he's totally in control up there. It's not great, but is creative and interesting. It's a bit pitchy in parts and I wish there was more energy.
Randy says "it wasn't good" and calls it the wrong song choice. Ellen didn't like it either. Kara feels bad for him, tells him to stop chasing the moment, be yourself, you're far from "Straight Up."
Simon says maybe we overrated that moment . . . and that the arrangement was horrific. "You sucked the soul out of that song, ruined one of the great pop songs of all time, and made yourself really, really corny."
Andrew's listening seriously to Simon, which is good.
