Casey Abrams, with his electric bass, is doing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on "American Idol." It's the first time Nirvana's been done on the show. Not sure why they think it's such a big risk. They're pretty mainstream.
But it's a tough song to sing and try to bring something new to. He gives it an almost-ironic twist at the start. He goes hardcore on the chorus. He's almost snarly. Wish James Durbin was singing this. Casey isn't bad, but it feels odd and not organic to me, especially when he's all grins afterward.
"You're so crazy, and you're so talented," says Steven Tyler. Jennifer Lopez say parts were a bit "screamy-screechy," Randy Jackson likes how he takes risk. He tells him it is not his best performance or vocal, but says he's fearless.
