Rarely do "Today Show" interviews -- particularly those conducted by the highly skilled Matt Lauer -- get completely out of hand, but the one with Christie Brinkley this morning brushed right  up against chaos.

Even Lauer was at a loss, and basically ceded the interview to the fates -- as if nothing he could do or say could  bring this one back under control.

It was putatively about Brinkley's starring role in "Chicago." But "putative" is, as always, the operative word in morning TV interviews: Clearly the Peter Cook divorce was going to be discussed and Brinkley had every intention of discussing it.

At the slightest provocation, she unleashed -- on Cook, the lawyers, the legal fracas, her children, and anything else even remotely connected to the split. Finally, she just about broke down in tears.

It was sad, and one of those rare instances on TV when true emotions come out, and not preset, precooked emotions designed to sell something.

I felt very bad for Brinkley and so, obviously, did Matt.
