Colton Dixon puts rock edge on Cyndi Lauper on 'American Idol'

Colton Dixon sings Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" next on "American Idol." It's an unexpected choice: As guest mentor Gwen Stefani says, at first she thought, "That's a little strange."

But then she says it was great; funny moment when her pal, mentor Jimmy Iovine, mentions how great she looks. She says, "Awww, Jimmy-Jim." Ha!

Dixon is putting an emo/rock spin on it. It reminds me of what David Cook used to do on the show. It's really good -- makes you think of the song differently without seeming strained and remains true to the emotion of the song.

"I felt so many things as I was watching that," says Jennifer Lopez. "I really liked that."

Randy Jackson likes how Dixon made the song his own.

Dixon says afterwards the arrangement came from a band, Quiet Drive. Great fit for him.
