Creighton Fraker, Shannon Macgrane, Reed Grimm make old songs shockingly new on 'American Idol'

New York Creighton Fraker singing "What a Wonderful World" next on "American Idol" -- somehow he brings a fresh, swinging feel to this song, it's a joy to listen to him; really laying it out there, at 28 it's his last chance on the show.

Gets a standing ovation from the judges, big smiles all around; it's amazing he made the song feel new.

Reed Grimm, who apparently thought he could sing a cappella but just found out, with 30 minutes to go, that he needed to find something he can sing with the band, scurries to find a new song and practice.

Meanwhile Shannon Macgrane singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for some reason. Hmm, really belting it, showing off her bluesy voice; again, she's taking this overexposed  song and making us listen, it's pretty amazing actually. "What the hell was that?!" exults Jennifer Lopez -- "you just surprised me, I don't get surprised very often."

Meanwhile Reed is talking to his mom, crying, pulling himself together and then running up on stage for his turn. Oh-oh, this has all the hallmarks of disaster... even says suddenly that he's going to play the drums, announcing to his fellow contestants he's going to be the next "American Idol" because "I got something ain't nobody got."

Wow, sweeeet voice, does this tender, joyful "Georgia on My Mind." I mean, it's amazing; three of the most difficult songs to stand out on, and all three of these guys knock it out of the park.

"Extraordinary!" yells Steven Tyler.

It's why we watch the show; just when we think we know it all, have seen it all....
