Elise Testone is singing Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" on "American Idol." Guest mentor Gwen Stefani calls her one of her favorite singers on the show, and thinks this could be a "magic moment" for her.
Wow; okay, let's see. Starts slow and pretty straightforward, not doing a whole lot with the song; just singing it passionately. Her tone, as always, is husky and interesting. But this definitely isn't giving us a moment, if anything she's oversinging and trying too hard as it goes on.
"Not sure if that song was the right song for you tonight, baby," says Steven Tyler.
Jennifer Lopez gives her the kiss of death, starting with, "you look beautiful tonight." She agrees it "wasn't totally right."
Randy Jackson thought it was pitchy the whole way through, "I think you're much better than this."
"It was out of tune everywhere for me; honestly."
She tells Ryan Seacrest afterwards she wants to sing it again. Yeah, they may have to use the judges' save tomorrow night on her.
The gimmick for filling two hours tonight is to have them sing duets. Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine's "Islands in the Stream" could be a record right now; even if they did nothing original, their voices blended well on this classic, with Jackson calling it "sweet and nice" and Tyler claiming it was a "match made in heaven."
