On her daytime talk show Tuesday, Ellen DeGeneres displayed a finger wrapped in hospital dressing and explained she had dislocated her finger.
“I know what you’re thinking,” she joked to the audience. “How can you host a show without the tip of your ring finger? I am not gonna let this beat me. I am not!”
DeGeneres, 59, went on to explain, “So, you know how in gymnastics when you do a one-handed cartwheel and you have to spread the weight evenly between all your fingers? Well, I had two glasses of wine and fell into a door.” She said she and her wife of eight years, actress Portia de Rossi, were arriving at their Los Angeles home after a dinner party and, at their front door, “The dogs were so excited to see us and I just caught the lip of the top step. I was like a foot away from the door and I fell into the door and it did something to my finger, because I knew something was wrong.”
She said de Rossi drove her to the UCLA Medical Center, where “of course, the receptionist had so many things for me to sign — a picture for her nephew, a T-shirt . . . ,” the Emmy Award-winner joked. “No, they were wonderful, UCLA, thank you so much. . . . So it turns out I didn’t break it. I dislocated my finger. That’s what they call it, which is an incorrect term because I knew where it was located. It was just wrongly located, is what it was. So, do you know what they do when you dislocate your finger? It’s very technical. What they do is they take the part that’s dislocated and then they just snap it right back into place. Yeah, you can see why they have to go to eight years of medical school.”
She said her nurse, Tammy, asked if she wanted a shot for the pain. “And I said, ‘No, I had two glasses of wine — that’s what got me into this mess in the first place, Tammy.’ ” The nurse warned that immediately following the shot to numb the pain, DeGeneres would feel a burning sensation. “And there was burning, alright … ohmigod, burning followed by cursing, is what happened. And think of any curse word, just think of any curse word, and I said that. I invented three new ones, actually.”
The show is taped in advance, and DeGeneres did not say on what night the incident took place.
