Erika Van Pelt singing Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" next on "American Idol," guest mentor Diddy warns her against oversinging. He tells the Rhode Islander to be a New Yorker while she's singing, "be raw, represent New York and take some risks."
Then fashion adviser Tommy Hilfiger literally transforms her, gets her to chop her hair like her idol Pink.
Whoa, she looks like a different person on stage; from blonde to brunette, long to short, and the vibe is totally different. It fits the tone of the song, actually; gives her an edgier feel and makes her performance credible.
She's singing the song from the heart, it feels real and it easily could've been hokey. Nice performance, good advice from Diddy and Hilfiger. And as she nails the last note; crowd gives her an extended ovation.
"I love the look, I love the short 'do," says Randy Jackson. "And I love the vocals." Jennifer Lopez loves the hair and the voice, just wants her to let loose even more.
Steven Tyler likes the personality she put into it, calls it "outstanding."
