'Flintstones' back in new cartoon version

It'll be a really modern Stone Age family: "Family Guy" and "American Dad" creator Seth MacFarlane will begin production this fall for Fox on the latest cartoon version of "The Flintstones" -- the first in more than a decade.

"The very first cartoon character I drew at age 2 was Fred Flintstone," MacFarlane said in a Fox Broadcasting statement Monday. "So it's appropriate that events have come full circle, allowing me to produce the newest incarnation of this great franchise. Plus, I think America is finally ready for an animated sitcom about a fat, stupid guy with a wife who's too good for him."

Set to feature the classic cast including babies Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm, the new series is scheduled to premiere in 2013.

The venerable franchise began as an ABC prime-time show in the 1960s and has been spun off and revived as series, a theatrical feature and TV movies. The most recent was the animated feature "The Flintstones: On the Rocks," which was released in 2001.
