'Glee's' final season gets launch date

84. “Glee

84. “Glee": TV's most successful and -- whether you are a Gleek or not -- best musical in history. Many have tried, most (“Cop Rock”) haven't quite hit the high notes. A terrific cast executed Ryan Murphy's theater-based musical tastes week after week. Credit: Fox

"Glee" finally has a date with destiny -- its own, and on a Friday night, no less. Fox just announced winter and mid-season dates for a whole slew of anticipated new shows -- "Backstrom" and "The Last Man on Earth" among them -- but "Glee" stole this particular press release, so to speak.

The final season will begin Friday, Jan. 9 -- a two-hour premiere, by the way. Friday? Yes, Friday... Not normally the kind of night a classic TV series covets for its final lap, but once upon a time, "The X Files" held down Fridays. Besides, we have something called "DVRs" now...

Series finale: March 20.

Here's the release:

"GLEE takes its final bow with a sixth and final 13-episode season starting with a special two-hour premiere event Friday, Jan. 9 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). New Directions’ original star, RACHEL BERRY (Golden Globe Award nominee Lea Michele), comes home to Lima, after her humiliating failure as a TV actress, and discovers that SUE SYLVESTER (Emmy Award winner Jane Lynch) has banished the arts at McKinley. Throughout its closing season, McKinley alumnae will return to say “good-bye” to the award-winning and groundbreaking musical comedy."

  Meanwhile...

 Rainn Wilson's "Backstrom:"  Thursday, Jan. 22, 9...

"The Last Man on Earth," Sunday, March 1...

"Weird Loners" (Becki Newton), Tuesday, March 31, 9:30...

"The Following," March 2, 8 (then, Monday, March 9 at 9.)
