Glenn Beck, who left Fox News in a blaze - almost literally - two years ago to launch his on-line pay-for-play network, "The Blaze," has a new home, and it's a familiar one: His channel will be carried by Cablevision starting later this month.
No details on exactly when or where - neither Cablevsion or his representative said where he would land in channel position terms - but both confirmed the pickup. This becomes Beck's first New York TV venue since leaving Fox. (It has been on DISH.) It's not goign to be available to all - as I understand it, "Optimum Preferred," with silver and gold packages...
In a statement released by his rep, Matthew Hiltzik, Beck's chief of business development, Lynne Costantini, said: "The Blaze is the rare independent network that has a built-in passionate, engaged and rapidly expanding audience and therefore adds value to Optimum TV's channel line-up. We are pleased to work with Cablevision to bring our network to Optimum TV customers."
A big deal? Yes: Beck had and has a following; 300,000 paying customers (about $10.00 per month) buy his channel TheBlaze. A controversial one? That too. TheBlaze is to the right of the Fox News Channel - far to the right - and his relations with his former employer remain tense, even bitter. Fox has said it did not exactly bar the door when he left because his ratings (for his 5 p.m. show) had cratered along with his ad revenue.
But Beck, at a recent NYU speech, said: "If you stay in it too long, you become Norma Desmond," referring to the FNC stint - not presumably to "Sunset Boulevard."
"I remember feeling, ‘If you do not leave now, you won’t leave with your soul intact."
What will this channel carry? A few details on that too. Per the Hiltzik release:
TheBlaze offers a full slate of original news and opinion shows like "Real News," "Wilkow!" and "For the Record," late night comedy like "The Wonderful World of Stu" and "B.S. of A.," family-friendly programming like "Liberty Treehouse" as well as thought-provoking documentaries and original specials.
