Gwen Stefani dressed the girls on "American Idol" in her L.A.M.B collection last night. And if you’ve ever gone to a L.A.M.B. fashion show during fashion week – we have – you know that Stefani styles her models in her image – the upswept ‘do, the funky mix ‘n’ match, the girlie-meets-gutsy combos. She tried it again here, but the effect was not always good.
Only Haley Reinhart rocked the L.A.M.B look with a plaid, cowled tunic, belted over leather leggings worn with sky-high strappy stilettos. She looked smoking.
Poor Lauren Alaina’s L.A.M.B.-look failed miserably. The gingham bustier and puffy shorts ensemble topped by a nipped tuxedo jacket did not flatter her nor did her bow to the singer’s iconic hairstyle. For Pia Toscano, the harem-pant, strapless jumpsuit in big animal print – well it was just too edgy for the girl – and conjured modern day “I Dream of Jeannie.”
Best dressed of the night, natch, was Jennifer Lopez but she wasn’t wearing L.A.M.B. We’re fairly certain that her ivory clinger with gold buckles was plucked right off the Herve Leger fall runway (to debut in stores next fall). She looked smashing, but hopefully she won’t try to get through airport security with all that hardware sewn into the dress.
As for the boys – a blah-ish vest-fest – Jacob Lusk wore a white one – Stefano Lagone did black. Casey Abrams went shleppy in a rumpled shirt and baggy pants and the always country Scotty Mcreery doled out a double dose of denim. Paul McDonald wore the skinny suit once again, thankfully dark, this one paired with an embroidered shirt.
We actually loved James Durbin’s rocker dandy look – the chiffon scarfy shirt, worn with skinny pants and a jacket. However he may be ODing on hair product, but his song and his get-up were great.
And speaking of rocker dandy, Steven Tyler eschewed his classic animal print for his intro to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His crazy, tight silver metallic ensemble – shiny shirt and skinny pants – well, only a rocker of his caliber could walk out that way.
