Harry Smith, the longtime co-anchor of "The Early Show" and veteran of CBS News, has joined NBC News. The news was reported last week, but NBC just made the official announcement. He'll contribute to that new live NBC News primetime magazine headed by Brian Williams.

Not too much is known about this new venture, other than the fact that it will be live; that's an interesting departure, and not one without risks. considering the fact that other primetime news mags (like "Now" and "Primetime Live") have tried and rejected this approach before. Here's a paragraph from Harry's announcement that sheds a bit more light:

Drawing on the unparalleled strength of America’s premier news organization, the weekly, hour-long program hosted by Brian Williams, the anchor and managing editor of “NBC Nightly News,” will be an exciting showcase for journalistic excellence. The live broadcast will be built around the week’s biggest and most interesting events, meaningful and in-depth stories, and timely newsmaker interviews. In addition to the innovative primetime television program, there will be groundbreaking, constantly evolving digital editions of the magazine that will be available online and via the show’s iPad app.
