Jerry O'Connell is stepping into Fred Gwynne's big boots to play Herman Munster in "Mockingbird Lane," NBC's drama revival of the 1960s sitcom "The Munsters."

O'Connell, who recently starred in CBS' "The Defenders," joins the previously cast Eddie Izzard as Dracula-like patriarch Grandpa, said The Hollywood Reporter.

Series executive producer Bryan Singer, whose credits include the first two X-Men movies and the pilot of "House," will direct the pilot episode.

"We want this show to be an American 'Harry Potter,' " series writer-producer Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies") told Entertainment Weekly. "To have that sense of a magical world that you get to go to with your family and find stories told in a fantastical way that are instantly relatable."

"The Munsters" -- about a typical suburban family in which dad Herman was a Frankenstein's Monster, mom Lily (Yvonne De Carlo) a vampire, and son Eddie (Butch Patrick) a werewolf -- ran from 1964 to 1966 on CBS.
