Jessica Sanchez sings first on the "American Idol" finale, doing Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," the choice of the show's creator, Simon Fuller.
She comes out in a long gown, singing slow and controlled. She's been my favorite all season, but it's not a special performance for me. Not a great song or choice, in my opinion, and although her vocals are strong as always, no hint of goose bumps.
Not sure why she keeps getting assigned to sing Whitney Houston songs; almost impossible to put your own mark on them, and they sound especially dated coming from a 16-year-old.
And because this is the way Fox likes to do things, they skip having the judges critique her afterward -- they'll wait until after the commercial and after Phillip Phillips sings his first song.
Because, you know, the best thing to do on a season finale is ditch the format you always use.
