John Oliver, HBO's new late night man and current cover of "Rolling Stone," was on "Late Show with David Letterman" last night, and - if you have a few minutes - it's worth watching. As Letterman approaches the end of his long and glorious run - expected to arrive next May - I'd like to pay closer attention to his accomplishments in this space, with your forbearance. What's special about this particular encounter is Letterman's simple and underrated ability to ask questions, and to listen, then follow-up. It's become a rare skill on late night TV, or if not rare, only sporadically deployed. But in the course of this brief, interview, Dave pulls out of Oliver just about every pertinent detail about the British soccer system that one could conceivably care to learn, while Oliver caps the whole exercise with this jewel: This explains why soccer will never take off in the U.S.
