Katie Couric will interview Manti Te'o and parents -- yes, an on-camera first (he spoke to ESPN Friday off-camera) -- for this Thursday's edition of her syndicated talk show, "Katie." And there is a “but,” a little one anyway. Both share the same spokesman, Matthew Hiltzik, which, as Deadspin, which broke this whole thing wide open last week, notes -- may be a “conflict of interest” and must mean the interview will “s---."
What say I? The interview will be fine. Who cares if they share the same PR man? It certainly helped Katie score the scoop but it's beyond inconceivable that she'll pull questions or punches simply because Hiltzik is in both their corners. Can you imagine him telling Katie to withhold questions?!
Uh-uh. It doesn't work that way: Katie tells Matt what to do, not the other way around. And by the way, Hiltzik's a pro: He knows the best way to handle this kind of huge interview isn't to withhold stuff but let it all hang out. There are a lot of interesting questions here, and everyone -- Katie most of all -- knows what they are, and they will be asked. But who knows whether Te'o will answer them.
