Katie Couric's new talk show will launch Sept. 10, her exec producer, Jeff Zucker, told stations yesterday. But what ABC -- which will carry it -- did not say was "where." That remains an issue simply because when "Katie" is incoming, another show will be outgoing, and supporters of "General Hospital" have already mounted a campaign to make certain the soap is not the one. When could "Katie" air? Certainly either 1 p.m. ("The Chew") or 2 p.m. ("The Revolution") would be logical time periods if either of those newcomers fail, but "Katie" and ABC are no doubt keenly aware of the fact that topical talk shows work best in late afternoon, which puts "GH" or "Eyewitness News" (4) in the crosshairs.
The absolutely best position on an ABC schedule for this kind of show? At 4 ... but there's certainly no reason 3 p.m. could not work either, which could mean an earlier time period for "GH." But that's just my speculation.
Tellingly, "Katie" announced the hiring of Joe Terry -- "Oprah's" longtime director. Kathy Samuels -- a veteran talk show producer and developer -- was named co-executive producer. "Katie's" e.p. is Zucker, the host's longtime pal and her former producer at "Today." And former chief exec of NBC Universal.
