'Luck' renewed: HBO

From acclaimed director Michael Mann and "Deadwood" creator

From acclaimed director Michael Mann and "Deadwood" creator David Milch, HBO's nine-episode season of "Luck" debuts Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012. The series is a behind-the-track look at the world of horse racing and gambling's denizens - owners, trainers, jockeys and gamblers, and stars Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. Here, Dustin Hoffman. Just a quick heads-up to all you "Luck" fans - HBO has renewed the freshman series after only one outing. (Or two, if you add the preview late last year.) This is not a surprise: When you get Dustin Hoffman, Michael Mann, and David Milch in the same room - believe me - you sign them as quickly as you can get a pen into their hands. The show got decidedly mixed reactions, among critics, and doubtless, among viewers. I loved it, and think it's one of the flat-out best hours of TV of the new year. But - hey! - that's me.  (Critics for the Times and New Yorker hated it.)
