“American Idol” front-runner Candice Glover does not have a wide range when it comes to fashion. But it doesn’t matter -- her vocal range is off the charts. On Wednesday night, the much-praised contestant wore mostly black -- once a soft cowled black shirt topped by an off-white snakeskin, studded leather jacket and snakeskin black leggings -- and for her second performance, a simple black, short-sleeved top worn over what looked to be the same pants along with sparkly silver platform stilettos. Her stellar performance of The Cure’s “Lovesong” prompted Mariah Carey to accessorize her on stage when she tossed a handful of glittery fairy dust upon the contestant to underscore her mastery.
The other finalists are far more into fashion -- but its not always a good thing. For example, Angie Miller’s first look was a too-tight, too-short brown dress with an asymmetrical slashed collar and a leather harness accent. Worn with high, high-heeled booties it was a touch hootchie and didn’t read well. She fared better the second time around in acid washed jeans and a leather T-shirt topped by a metallic vest.
Janelle Arthur's feather vest/necklace frontal thing looked strange over a white mock turtleneck with white jeans and sparkly boots. She looked pretty for her second number in a black sequin blouse and tiered tulle skirt.
Like Glover, Kree Harrison keeps it simple. Last night it was a minty green top with slashed sleeves over black pants. Second time around, she wore a dress – the first we’ve seen her in. We think she's great, but the tight, black, short frock worn with gladiator booties may have been off from a styling standpoint for this curvy gal.
Beautiful Amber Holcomb stunned, once again, in a strapless denim jumpsuit with wide legs and zipper trim. A gold belt with medallion details encircled her slim waist. Randy Jackson said, “I loved the whole '70s pantsuit.” We liked her second look less, but it was sexy. The ensemble -- a graffiti printed short jacket worn with a hot pink top and frayed denim short shorts – was finished off with hot pink high heeled pumps. “The stallion legs is poppin’,” said Nicki Minaj of the contestant’s leggy look.
Poor Lazaro Arbos seems to be trying to compensate for his mediocre performances with ultra-dandy getups. The first, a strange suit printed in graphic green and blue geometrics was perfectly matched with blue suede bucks with green soles. His next outfit was equally over-the-top: a white tuxedo jacket, dotted shirt with scarlet roses at the bottom, red pants and a silver bow tie. Time to go Lazaro.
