Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney -- on Thursday's "Today" show -- also visited Wednesday's "Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," in a little segment called "Mitt in the Mirror." (Helen Mirren did a similar bit on the show last year.)
But that's not the headline. The headline is this: It was funny.
"Romney" and "funny" are words not normally conjoined in a sentence, but they are here and were on Wednesday night. Credit to Fallon and his writers for making this topical. (Of course, a One-Direction joke; How could there not be?)
But also credit to Romney who displayed a characteristic utterly essential to any candidate seeking the highest office: An ability to roll and roll well with the late night guys. Romney in fact was not here — at least putatively — for political reasons. He is not running this time, and in fact is promoting a "boxing" match with Evander Holyfield, for charity. Romney's received considerable attention for this in recent days, and has crafted a few one-liners that adequately describe the challenge before him.
Why wasn't this side of Romney on display four years ago? (Or was it? No... it wasn't.) Who knows. A question for historians.
