Talk about a compliment. On Wednesday night’s “American Idol” Nicki Minaj told Amber Holcomb that she was emoting “Naomi Campbell realness.” The comparison to the legendary supermodel was high praise, and Minaj wasn’t the only one jumping on the Holcomb beauty bandwagon. Keith Urban said, “Great shoes.” Mariah Carey added, “You look beautiful.” And Randy Jackson, who rarely discusses how the girls look -- (after all, he calls everyone “dude”) -- said, “You look amazing. Giving them those legs tonight.”
Indeed Holcomb was flashing some serious leg in black leather short shorts trimmed with gold zippers to match her zipper encrusted bomber jacket.
Speaking of flashing, Angie Miller had a tiny wardrobe malfunction. The wind machine, meant to artfully blow her curly mane, lifted her shirt revealing her tummy. No harm done, the gal is in great shape. She wore sleeveless tank embellished with some chunky hardware and chains, slim, shredded black jeans and high boots.
Kree Harrison traded in her typically all-black ensemble for a light, blush colored shirt over black pants. A bit boring. Candice Glover stuck with all black wearing a blazer piped in silver, shirred shirt over black leggings with graphic sequin embellishment at the sides.
The boys were the boys. Burnell Taylor donned a studded black leather jacket over a plaid shirt and black jeans. And Lazaro Arbos' take on rock ‘n’ roll casual included a leather jacket, a burgundy ruffled and sequin shirt, snake patterned jeans with a sequin tuxedo stripe and a bow tie. Yikes. Minaj was not a fan.
Lady judges went for similar colors once again this week. What’s going on? Both were strutting the blues. Minaj wore a blue/green dress with sheer panels at the arms. It had an exaggerated silhouette that was nipped at the waist and curvy at the hips. Carey looked lovely in a robin’s egg blue silky “cold shoulder” frock.
And how could we forget Janelle Arthur’s hokey country get up. Apparently, the judges coveted it. She performed in a long fringed vest of pinkish metallic leather over a black top and pants. And then there were the rhinestone cowboy boots. “I thought they fit the rock theme,” Arthur said. “Because they’re stoned.”
Urban said he loved the boots. Minaj told him that he wasn’t allowed to critique fashion... that was her job. And then she said she loved the boots, which she wore after the commercial break. More interesting, Jackson said he loved the vest and boasted “I’ll wear the vest.” And he actually did... on top of his shoulders though it looked like doll clothes on big Randy.
