Merrick-raised pop singer Debbie Gibson and her professional partner, Alan Bersten, were eliminated on Tuesday’s edition of “Dancing With the Stars.”
Despite hitting 21 points, their season high, the duo placed in the bottom two, along with singer Nick Lachey and pro partner Peta Murgatroyd. Following viewer votes, Gibson became the season’s second celebrity eliminated.
She told hosts Erin Andrews and Tom Bergeron that, “This show, in this short amount of time, and this guy right here,” indicating Bersten, “I feel like I got my life back” after having spent years battling the physically debilitating effects of Lyme disease. Of her time on the show, she assured gratefully, “I am so thrilled.”
On Tuesday’s show, Gibson journeyed metaphorically from her native Merrick to a smoky bar in Buenos Aires as she and Bersten performed an Argentine tango on Latin Night.
Bedecked in a daring, spangled red dress, the singer took to heart judge Bruno Tonioli’s gentle night-one admonition to display “a little nastiness in there.” She and Bersten swirled around the nightclub set to Camila Cabello’s “Havana,” and even danced up a chair onto a table — where he picked her up as she coiled around him, and then spun her around. Afterward, a delighted Tonioli pronounced the 47-year-old performer “the cougar from Cuba!”
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba told Gibson, “It was nice to see this side of you, a little more aggressive,” and judge Len Goodman complimented her cheekily, saying, “Debbie, you little strumpet!,” and called her dance “well done.”
