Steven Tyler, after just two seasons as the front man -- or one of 'em -- for the "American Idol" judging panel, said Thursday that he's leaving the show.

His statement:

After some long ... hard ...t houghts…I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress ‘American Idol’ before she boils my rabbit,” said Tyler. “I strayed from my first love, AEROSMITH, and I’m back -- but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band. The next few years are going to be dedicated to kicking some serious ass -- the ultimate in auditory takeover…On Nov. 6, we are unleashing our new album, Music from Another Dimension on the Earth, Moon, Mars, and way beyond the stars … IDOL was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it … Now it’s time to bring Rock Back. ERMAHGERD.”

Yeah, bummer.

 And ermahgerd too.

(By the way, to boil one's rabbit - ahem - refers to an unhealthy obsession; genesis is "Fatal Attraction.")

Now, time to celebrate that brief tenure! Tyler was a fun judge though -- I think we can all agree -- he really should stick to his day job. He really didn't like to criticize; artists usually don't. But he has a certain style that lent itself well here .

But recall last season, when the camera panned off to Jenn or Randy - you'd catch a quick glance at him, and there would be a picture  of pure, abject, undiluted BOREDOM. He probably assumed this would be an easy paycheck, a career re-boot, and -- when he had the time -- a few gigs on the side. His touring career of course never stopped - he was at Nassau Coliseum a week or so ago - and he fell off a stage during the Argentinan leg ... In fact, things seem to be going pretty well for Aerosmith right now; he and Joe Perry are pals again, after a long feud where Perry (at one point) accused him of paying more attention to "Idol" than the band. The current tour has also received  good notices.

I have other theories too -- "Idol" is desparate to reboot its own career, and get some mojo back. Plus, these judges are darned expensive. They want to re-up JLO, and that means they need to cut some $$$s out of the production budget. This departure was and is an easy call for 'em.

But not for me. I'm a Tyler fan ... He will be missed:
