Take 5: Forever ember - shows about firefighters

'Rescue Me," the bawdy drama focusing on the tumultuous private and work lives of FDNY firefighter Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary), returns for its sixth season Tuesday at 10 p.m. on FX. Here are five other series about firefighters:

"Code Red" (1981-82, ABC) - Lorne Greene ("Bonanza") starred as the head of a family of firefighters.

"Emergency!" (1972-77, NBC) - Popular semidocumentary series with Jack Webb ("Dragnet") chronicled the exploits of Station 51 of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Paramedical Rescue Service.

"Firehouse" (1974, ABC) - James Drury ("The Virginian") starred as the captain of Los Angeles' Engine Company 23 in this action drama that was supposed to be ABC's answer to "Emergency!"

"L.A. Firefighters" (1996, Fox) - Short-lived summer series about the working and personal lives of the firefighters at Los Angeles' Station 132.

"Third Watch" (1999- 2005, NBC) - The action series focused on New York cops, paramedics and firefighters. Eddie Cibrian stood out as hunky smoke-eater Jimmy Doherty.
