What next for "Dexter," which begins a new season Oct. 2?
Showtime screened an extended trailer for critics this morning and later addressed questions about one striking image in particular — Dex, prostrate, or semi-prostrate (and of course, blood spattered) before a crucifix.
Christian themes — or the debasing thereof — in a show about a serial killers may be certain to arouse antipathy in a certain segment of the audience (including a large portion of the audience that doesn't even watch).
But Showtime Entertainment chief David Nevins took some pains to say that the story line will be inoffensive: "Jesus will not appear this season," he joked. Dex, he said, is exploring what he wants to pass on to his son, cognizant of the fact that a serial killer has limited options in the values departure. Spirituality, therefore, will assume a central position next season, he said.
