Kree Harrison or Candice Glover is about to be crowned the "American Idol" season 12 champion. I think it'll be Harrison based on her recent surge, even though I feel Glover is more deserving.
They're both excellent singers though, so this isn't one of those seasons where it's a travesty if someone doesn't win (paging Adam Lambert.)
One last distraction -- last season's judge Jennifer Lopez comes back, with Pitbull, doing "Live It Up." She's good; can't take your eyes off her, the consummate performer. I liked her too as a judge, she was perceptive yet compassionate.
Easily one of the best performances on a night when we saw an over-the-hill Frankie Valli, strutting Psy, strong Jennifer Hudson, half-naked Jessie J, smooth Adam Lambert and surprisingly effective Aretha Franklin.
Harrison and Glover sing one last duet, Burt Bacharach and Hal David's 1967 song "One Less Bell to Answer." They are forgettable; Fox's producers should be fired for thinking this is a good way to wrap up a season that's seen an unparalleled level of vocal talent.
They then hold each other as Ryan Seacrest announces the winner is -- Candice Glover! She's in tears; for some reason she and all the other finalists are decked out in all black.
Sings us out with "I Am Beautiful." She's always had the vocal pipes; but at the beginning of the finals she didn't have the stage presence she displays now. Utterly confident now, she's been shaping the song to match her unique voice the last few weeks.
The words are heartfelt; a rawness to them; even if she's out of tune while trying to sing through tears and a torrent of emotion.
Wow, what a great end to a fantastic season. I don't think there's ever been a final four as talented and deserving as Glover, Harrison, Angie Miller and Amber Holcomb.
And, of course, after five guys in a row won, we have another female champion -- so season six Jordin Sparks won't feel so lonely.
Looking forward to great things from Glover. She's got all the talent in the world, now we'll see if she'll have the commercial appeal.
