Saluting those who gave all.
Memorial Day movies
War stories stretch back 100 years, to 1915's silent-film era, as Turner Classic Movies' weekend marathon honors soldiers' sacrifice. The battles go back even earlier, to the 1860s Civil War, in films as recent as 1989's "Glory" (Saturday at 10:30), and as rare as 1915's "The Coward" (Sunday morning at 4:30). Sunday overnight has two moving World War I classics -- silent star John Gilbert's hit "The Big Parade" and director Jean Renoir's "Grand Illusion" (12:15 and 3 a.m.). Monday's World War II focus includes "The Dirty Dozen" (2:45 p.m.) and George C. Scott's towering "Patton" (10:15 p.m., all on TCM). Another weekend marathon from AMC includes Saturday's "The Dirty Dozen" (11 a.m.), tomorrow's "Rambo" triple feature (noon-6:30 p.m., repeats 6:30 p.m.-1 a.m.), and Monday's "Saving Private Ryan" (10 a.m., 2 and 6 p.m., all on AMC). Full lineups at tcm.com and amctv.com.
Want something new? Catch up to the current season of time-tripping fantasy fave "Outlander" (Saturday 2-10 p.m., Sunday 2:45-10 p.m., Starz), before next weekend's season-ender. Vintage marathons fill the day Monday -- Scott Bakula's fantasy fave "QuantumLeap" (6 a.m.-5 a.m., Cozi TV/4.2), hosted by comic Chuck Nice with special "Cosmic Queries" guest Neil deGrasse Tyson; those romping '60s rockers "The Monkees" (6:30 a.m.-6 p.m., IFC); and the Depression-set '70s family hit "The Waltons" (2-9 p.m., Hallmark).
