In “Vice Principals,” a new HBO series (premiering July 17), Danny McBride and Walton Goggins play two rivals who share that position at a high school. Here are five other notable TV principals:

OSGOOD CONKLIN (Gale Gordon) on “Our Miss Brooks” (1952-56) Grouchy, blustery principal of Madison High butted heads frequently with the show’s titular teacher (Eve Arden).

MICHAEL WOODMAN (John Sylvester White) on “Welcome Back, Kotter” (1975-79) The Sweathogs’ vertically challenged, curmudgeonly foe at Buchanan High.

SEYMOUR SKINNER (Voiced by Harry Shearer) on “The Simpsons” (1989-) Bart’s nemesis was a mama’s boy, ex-Green Beret with the hots for teacher Edna Krabappel.

GEORGE FEENY (William Daniels) on “Boy Meets World” (1993-2000) In addition to being a principal, he lived next door to series star Cory (Ben Savage) and was like a second father to him.

STEVEN HARPER (Chi McBride) on “Boston Public” (2000-04) This earnest, dedicated principal of an inner-city Boston high school was a tube rarity: He wasn’t being played for laughs.
