And just like that, Meredith Vieira, former co-anchor of "Today," has rejoined the network after what now appears to have been just a brief summer hiatus. She'll be a special correspondent for the new news mag, "Rock Center with Brian Williams." She'll also contribute to "Today," as well as file reports for the 2012 Olympics from London.
"From the day that Meredith joined us at NBC News, we knew she was family,” said Steve Capus, NBC News prez. “Meredith’s immeasurable talents reach beyond the newsroom to connect with the extraordinary people she interviews as well as the viewers at home. She is as genuine as you can get, a world-class journalist and a captivating storyteller. These skills will be hugely beneficial to ‘Rock Center with Brian Williams’ and across NBC News.”
It's unexpected, to say the least. Vieira -- still host of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" -- left "Today" to spend more time with her family and was fried after five years of getting up at 4 in the morning. Hours for the new gig are expected to be, shall we assume, more manageable.
