"We Are Men," a new CBS Monday comedy, is done. The network has pulled it for "Mike & Molly," which was to have arrived later this season. The cancellation is a slight surprise for normally patient CBS, which has the luxury of patience. Scratch that last line: No network has the luxury of patience anymore, given the ferocious churn that's going on with viewership.

Clearly audiences sampled "Men," audiences rejected "Men." There was simply no reason to move forward. Which certainly begs at least one question: What is going on with network comedies this season?

Most of the newcomers are either vulgar or unfunny, and a few even manage both. I am currently mindful of that prominent question that circulated back in the '80s before "The Cosby Show"came along: Is comedy dead? It's not of course — just in a waiting period, in an urgent quest to find The Next Funny Thing.
