'Wakaliwood: The Documentary'

Long Island meets Uganda this Thursday night at the Cinema Arts Centre, when Alan Hofmanis and producer Ben Barenholtz present a free screening of their work-in-progress "Wakaliwood: The Documentary."

It's the story of I.G.G. Nabwana, a filmmaker working in the slums of Wakaliga, Uganda, who makes action movies using home-made computers, props made of scrap-metal and local villagers as actors. When a trailer for Nabwana's film "Who Killed Captain Alex?" hit the Web a couple of years ago, Hofmanis, a frequent programmer at Cinema Arts and an East Northport native, was so intrigued by its wild energy and creative use of crude materials that he bought a ticket to Uganda and tracked down the filmmaker. He began making this documentary and, inevitably, wound up starring in one of Nabwana's films.
