FIRE ISLAND - More Fire Island residents were allowed to return to their homes today. It's been 16 days since Hurricane Sandy struck, and summer residents were finally able to return to Fire Island today to see their homes. The Kismet Fire Department has been acting as the command post for all area fire officials since the storm hit. Chief Domenic Bertucci says fire officials meet there every morning to discuss objectives and concerns, which have included preparations for residents' temporary return this week. Full-time residents say there should be more than just firefighters dealing with the island's safety. "This place is like a war zone," resident Amanda Fabian says. "The National Guard should be here." Residents can return to Fire Island from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. through Saturday.CHOPPER 12: Fire Island Sandy damage 12 days laterFire Island residents ordered to evacuate as Sandy nears
