Levittown at 70: Five homes for sale

Levittown, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, was the first mass-produced suburbia, and it was a societal model providing homes for the flood of triumphant GIs returning from World War II. Suddenly, the American dream was within reach for many: Ownership of a home in a pristine environment dotted with swimming pools and community centers cost as little as a $65 monthly mortgage payment. Here are five Levittown homes for sale that retain some characteristics of the originals.

LISTING AGENT Sean O’Connor with Exit Realty Gateway at 516-900-1313. Levittown homeowners “take pride in their living space and they’re good at utilizing it,” he says. “The houses built in the late 1940s and 1950s were placed on concrete slabs, so they can’t just put stuff in the basement.” Dec. 21, 2017

WHAT’S FOR SALE This is a five-bedroom, two-bath Colonial built in 1951 with an eat-in kitchen, large living room with a vaulted ceiling and skylight, a formal dining room and a modern kitchen. It also has a master bedroom, an office and a new patio overlooking a 51-by-131-foot lot. The fireplace that once occupied the center of the home was taken out to add living space. The heating system was moved to the garage, which also was turned into a family room with the front reserved for a laundry room and utilities. The home is close to its original floor plan except for the addition of a full-sized dormer on both the home’s front and rear.

LISTING AGENT Matthew Korman with Douglas Elliman at 516-318-3760. One of the main reasons for the renewed interest in Levittown homes is the price, Korman says. “This is one of the few places in Nassau County where you can still find something under $500,000,” he says. Dec. 22, 2017
