If you’re in the event-planning business, chances are you’ve heard of Lawrence Scott Events. Known for planning over-the-top, spectacular events—including celebrity weddings, Lawrence Scott Gottesman has a reputation for his one-of-a-kind celebrations that that regularly include celebrity guests such as Andy Cohen, Christy Brinkley and Kelly Ripa. His creativity and eye for art show in his work, and he credits Long Island as a huge source of inspiration.

When asked where he gets his ideas, Gottesman, a Hicksville native, said, “I can just drive down the Northern State Parkway and look at the scenery, and it just sets something off for me. You can be at the beach or the park, or even taking a boat over to Fire Island, and there’s just a sense of creative freedom. It’s inspirational.”

He also notes the importance of community and his decision to keep his business local. “I brought my business to Manhattan, but ultimately came back to Hicksville. I wanted to come back to my roots and keep my business in the same community I grew up in because it keeps me grounded.” But there’s a big perk of planning events here, too. “Long Island-based events have now become the go-to, because you have so many options to work with. Movies like 'The Great Gatsby' really prove that Long Island evokes a feeling of luxury, and that feeling has not gone away.”

Gottesman recommends looking into venues such as Oheka Castle, the Wolffer Estate or any of the North Fork wineries for the ultimate wedding experience. “These locations give the feeling of a destination wedding, without ever having to leave Long Island.”

Gottesman also urges brides to think outside the box, as he does when planning his exceptional parties. “There are no rules! There should be no ‘trend’ in a wedding. Each wedding tells a story, so one bride who wants her wedding to be held at the ornate Garden City Hotel should differ from the bride who wants her wedding at an earthy and organic space, such as a barn.”

Because he is one of the most sought-after high-end event planners on Long Island, we had to know—what’s worth splurging on? “The dress, the food and the music are important items in making your wedding a success. People come to weddings expecting a party, so when I plan an event, I make sure to supply the fun stuff -- sometimes that means milkshakes at midnight or a DJ that will keep guests dancing out on the floor until the very end.”
